Judging by the popularity of the game- Dwarf Fortress has been downloaded more than a million times-many agree. “We’d written them as carnivorous and roughly the same size as dwarves, so that just happened, and it was great.” In an interview with the New York Times, Adams tells of his surprise when he discovered that the carp he programmed into the game also turned out to be dangerous monsters with an appetite for dwarf warriors: For the person who takes the time to understand the game’s mysteries, it becomes a world that’s almost got a life of its own. It’s also the reason he has spent several years adjusting and tweaking the balance in Dwarf Fortress and the nearly infinite number of situations that can arise from the combinations of thousands of different objects, creatures, and occurrences. ![]() Great game play and interesting mechanics are always more important that good-looking graphics, maintains Dwarf Fortress‘s creator, Tarn Adams. They also give the game’s developer time to focus on other things. ![]() Just interpreting the information that’s presented on the screen demands a lot of study, and it’s not a wild guess that most people who download Dwarf Fortress give up after only a couple of minutes.īut the simple graphics are not there just to scare off all but the most devoted players. Many Dwarf Fortress players maintain that the simple graphics make the game more immersive-for what giant spider could possibly be scarier than the one you imagine?-but for beginners it is, to say the least, a deterrent. Small, smiling faces of different colors represent the dwarves. Minerals to be mined from the rock are represented by the British pound sign, beds are pale-yellow crosses, grassy meadows and trees are green dots and triangles, and so on. In this game, a terrifying giant spider is not a detailed 3-D model but a simple gray letter S. The Dwarf Fortress game world is completely made up of letters, numbers, and other symbols that can be typed on a regular keyboard. But Dwarf Fortress is different from most other games of the genre in a couple of ways.įirst of all, the graphics are highly stylized. The basic game mechanics are similar to many other strategy games- The Sims, for example, where the player manages a household, or the Facebook game FarmVille, where the objective is to get a farm to flourish. The player controls a group of dwarves that can each be put to various tasks (chopping down trees, mining ore from the mountain, cooking, making furniture, fishing, for example) or made to protect the fortress from monsters such as evil vampires, giant spiders, trolls, and wolves. In Dwarf Fortress the player is tasked with helping a group of dwarf warriors build a fortress in bedrock. ![]() The idea for Minecraft began to take shape in his encounter with Dwarf Fortress. Markus had downloaded it to try it out himself and watched, entranced by the simple text world drawn up in front of him.Ī couple of weeks had passed since Markus started working at Jalbum and his thoughts were circling full speed around the game he’d promised himself he’d work on. ![]() The game was called Dwarf Fortress and it had become a cult favorite in indie circles. ![]() The Bottom LineĪs with any rare coin, it’s essential to ensure that your valuable coins with no mint mark are professionally graded, so you aren’t buying or selling a fake or purposefully damaged coin. The 1983 no-S Roosevelt proof dimes are worth about $1,000. Experts estimate that there are only around 3,000 of these coins in existence. The 1983 no-S Roosevelt proof dime is the last in the Roosevelt series to be struck without a mint mark, though the exact number made is unknown. One of these scarce coins once traded for $300,000. The rarity of these coins might be explained in two possible ways: the Mint discovered the error early enough that only two were struck or the coins were deliberately made. The first was discovered in a 1975-S proof set in 1977, and the second was found seven years later. There are only two of these dimes known to exist. 1975 no-S Roosevelt proof dimeĪnother valuable and rare coin without a mint mark is the 1975 no-S Roosevelt proof dime. The 1971 no-S Jefferson proof nickels in the best condition are worth about $1,100. This is the only coin in the entire Jefferson Nickel collection that was struck without a mint mark. Only 200 no-S proof nickels are known to exist. These coins were only minted in San Francisco, but the rare no-S variety were struck without the mint mark. The 1971 no-S Jefferson proof nickel is another valuable coin with no mint mark. The 1968 no-S dime is typically worth between $15,000 and $25,000. This coin’s error occurred when the US Mint “left the mint mark off the die when it was prepared in Philadelphia before shipment to San Francisco.” Because there are so few of these coins, it’s probable that the San Francisco Mint caught the mistake reasonably early. ![]() ![]() These coins are valuable because they are very rare only a few dozen exist. With a mintage of about 7 million, these pennies in their intended form aren’t scarce, but a small percentage of these coins show no trace of a D mint mark. 1922 no-D Lincoln PennyĪll 1922 Lincoln pennies were struck in Denver, so they should all have a D mint mark. Here are several rare coins without mint marks that hold a much higher value than the original minted face value. Certain coins without mint marks are extremely valuable, but it’s essential to watch out for the coins that were altered or damaged by someone outside the mint. When a coin has no mint mark, can it still hold value? The short answer is sometimes. ![]() As in the first Company Of Heroes the multiplayer map is split into territories, like a miniaturised version of Risk, control of which gives you access to one of the four main resources. And, at this early stage at least, it does seem a genuine alternative. The Theatre of War missions also include co-op, which is a great way to share the burden of the large population count and leads logically into what for many will be the game’s raison d’être: the multiplayer.īeefed up with modern features like team customisation and instant recording and streaming of matches, Company Of Heroes 2 is clearly aiming its sights at no less than Starcraft II itself. Released from the constraints of trying to portray the bigger picture they often have much smaller objectives (take out a specific enemy unit or structure) but offer you greater freedom in how you approach them. Similarly the Theatre of War missions are often much more focused and interesting than the rest of the story campaign. As a result it’s actually Company Of Heroes 2’s smaller moments – such as a tense showdown with a single Tiger tank in a deserted village – that prove memorable than the larger scale battles. These issues don’t come close to ruining the game – and are much less prevalent than in most other similar games – but they do underline how little it has really changed from either the original or the status quo of real-time strategies in general. ![]() The tactics of your enemies also sometimes seems suspect, particularly the enemy tanks that seem to do nothing more than advance to point blank range and sit there firing away like immobilised Daleks. ![]() The visuals might be state-of-the art but the pathfinding of your soldiers is often illogical at best and suicidal at worst. Selecting the right unit to set off a particular special ability takes some high precision clicking when you’re trying to control an army of 100+ men on multiple fronts. The cut scenes are filled with melodrama and bad accents, but watching what your virtual soldiers have to go through in the actual game makes them much more sympathetic.Īnd despite the emphasis on spectacle and accessibility the game does eventually begin to become unwieldy. The storytelling in particular feels like a backwards step, relying on the old cliché of a solider recounting his exploits in flashback to an unsympathetic interrogator. Unfortunately though the gameplay itself has seen much less advancement. This is one of the most technically advanced titles on the PC and the attention to detail – from the recoil on tank guns to the tactics-altering simulation of snow – is a real milestone for in-game visuals. It goes to considerable effort to teach its systems and mechanics to new players and only gradually introduces elements such as resource management and building construction in later missions.īut what’ll have much more immediate impact on novice players is just how amazing the graphics are. ![]() This sequel focuses on the Russian front and the appalling weather conditions under which the bloodiest battles of the war were fought.Įven with games as simple as Command & Conquer many people worry that real-time strategies are too complicated or slow-paced, but Company Of Heroes 2 is neither. Until that date, the station's analog audio signal transmitted on a frequency of 87.75 MHz (+10 kHz shift). On June 12, 2009, WCSH ceased normal programming on analog VHF channel 6 and began providing a " nightlight" service. WCSH's digital signal on UHF channel 44 signed on in 2002, bringing high definition network television to the area. Since 2000, WLBZ has for all intents and purposes been a semi-satellite of WCSH as early as 1989, WLBZ had been reducing its personnel and consolidating some internal operations with WCSH. ![]() In 1998, the Maine Broadcasting System (by this time controlled by the Rines-Thompson family) sold WCSH and WLBZ to current owner Gannett. In the mid-1990s, WCSH added a website providing 24-hour news and weather coverage outside newscasts. The radio stations were sold off in 1981 in 1997, the -TV suffix was dropped. In 1977, WCSH-TV moved to new facilities across the street from the hotel at One Congress Square, where it remains today. At various points, the Maine Broadcasting System also included WRDO radio in Augusta and KMEG in Sioux City, Iowa, with WCSH-AM-TV as its flagship. Although the two television stations were now sister stations, they remained completely separate entities. In 1958, the Rines family acquired WTWO in Bangor from Murray Carpenter, and renamed it WLBZ-TV (after WLBZ radio, now WZON, which the family had owned since 1944). It has always been an NBC affiliate, although during the late-1950s, the station was also briefly associated with the NTA Film Network. The station was owned by the Rines family through their Maine Broadcasting System the family had built the hotel in 1896, and established WCSH radio (970 AM, now WZAN) on the top floor in 1925. WCSH-TV signed on Decemfrom studios at the Congress Square Hotel in downtown Portland. The stations have produced an eight minute newscast that is looped every 10 minutes and is updated throughout the day. On WCSH-DT2 as well as Comcast and Time Warner Cable digital channel 166 is a 24-hour local news and weather channel. With their combined resources, the stations provide statewide coverage not offered by any other outlet in Maine. Although WCSH and WLBZ are based in different locations and technically serve separate markets, the two essentially operate as one station. WLBZ also airs separate station identifications and commercials. Syndicated programming exclusive to this station includes Cash Cab. There are also programs that only air on WLBZ while some are only seen on WCSH. It simulcasts most of WCSH's newscasts and clears most of its syndicated programming (though in some cases at different times). For all intents and purposes, WLBZ is a semi-satellite of WCSH. WCSH is the sister station to Maine's other NBC affiliate, WLBZ in Bangor. Syndicated programming on WCSH includes: Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, The Doctors, Anderson and Inside Edition. Owned by Gannett, WCSH has studios at Congress Square in Downtown Portland. There is a high definition signal offered on Comcast digital channel 504 and Time Warner Cable digital channel 506. This is an excellent movement to improve hip flexion and active hamstring mobility. The following exercises should be a strong component of any athlete’s hip mobility work, as they will produce faster results than the typically prescribed foam roll and stretching routines. Still, when proper core stabilization movements are performed, this increased muscle tone instantly vanishes, and mobility problems are gone! The hip flexors (like the hamstrings) are another muscle group that often feels tight in athletes. The body’s response is to increase the tone in a muscle to provide some false-stabilization. Often, the body realizes it does not have the needed stability around a joint due to muscle weakness. Secondly, it will serve as a “reset” to muscle tone around the hips. Hip “mobility” work done this way will have two effects.įirst, it will reposition the pelvis to a more neutral position, allowing for improved mobility within the hip socket. As the athlete learns to better control the core and pelvis, mobility will drastically improve! Perform movements that challenge the available active hip range of motion while engaging the core to stabilize the pelvis. The solution to hip mobility problems is simple. And this effect can also be seen when working to improve hip extension, rotation, and functional patterns such as the squat. This simple repositioning of the pelvis can provide more gains than months of static stretching, manual therapy, and self-myofascial work combined. Quite often, simply cueing the athlete to “push your rib cage down” or “flatten your lower back into the floor” will result in a posterior pelvic tilt that instantly improves “hamstring mobility” and decreases the perception of hamstring tightness and muscle strain. To test this, I have athletes perform a straight leg raise while lying on their backs. More often than not, I find that simple core stabilization movements will provide immediate improvement in their perceived tightness or chronic hamstring muscle strains. In an anteriorly rotated pelvis, the hamstrings will have increased tension placed on them, thus resulting in a perceived decrease in flexibility. I’ve yet to meet an athlete who doesn’t claim to have “tight hamstrings.” Even in the elite gymnasts, dancers, runners, and yogis that I work with, the belief that their hamstrings should be further stretched is rampant. The hamstrings are the perfect example of the effects pelvic positioning can have on mobility. In contrast, and anterior pelvic tilt will result in increased hip extension. For example, a posterior tilt of the pelvis will put the hips in a position advantageous to improve hip flexion mobility. Contraction of the muscles around the pelvis can result in changes in pelvic positioning and thus available hip range of motion. Instead, small stability changes at the pelvis can provide drastically fast improvements in performance. ![]() Months of intense stretching techniques provide little actual change in available motion and only serve to waste time and create pain in the athletes. Quitting static stretching and refocusing your mobility work on more effective exercises will improve not only your mobility but your athletic performance as well! And will do so in a fraction of the time.īecause of the inherent stability of the hip joint provided by the ball-and-socket, many athletes and coaches spend far too much time trying to improve hip mobility by performing stretching and soft tissue work. Sadly their mobility work does not address the true root of their problems, and their constant stretching, foam rolling, and joint band distractions get them nowhere… AND THE HIPS ARE THE GREATEST EXAMPLE OF THIS PROBLEM with athletes everywhere wasting hours on useless mobility work! Unfortunately, most athletes performing these hip mobility drills have yet to figure out that much of their mobility work does not result in real performance gains! Mobility tools and drills are becoming commonplace in gyms, CrossFit boxes, and on the playing field. The fitness world has come a long way in our understanding of the importance mobility work has on athletic performance. ![]() Logs and user data: The company says it doesn't store users logs or share personal information. ![]() Security: To create its point-to-point private connections, Betternet uses OpenVPN, an open-source, widely used VPN application, and AES-256 encryption. ![]() But Betternet does have dedicated servers for subscribers and limits the users on those, so their data transfer can be quicker.
